I'm still alive... and so is my blog.
I know you may be wondering what happened to me and/or my blog. Well, I'm still here and my blog is, too. It is getting a new coat of paint and will be back better than ever soon.
In the meantime, I wanted to give you a gift. A fellow blogger said, "This will change your life." I say if this doesn't get you in the holiday spirit, nothing will.
Enjoy.

We host our photos online using flickr. We put them up under a creative commons license that says you can use our photos non-commercially. I'm no professional. If someone wants to use some of our work, I don't have a problem with it.
This has come up before when the Schmap Orlando Guide wanted to use one of our photos.
Well, while we were on our cruise, I got a message from someone else saying that they had used one of our photos in a video. This time it was more of a kind gesture to let us know that they had used it, which is not required under the license, and not them requesting permission.
The photo they used was one of Jeramie and Joye in front of their house just after they had bought it. You can see it at the 5:15 mark.
Disclaimer: The election is over. Please don't comment on anything political. I just thought it was cool that my photo was used.

Busted

The other day, I got the following email from the YouTube Content Identification Team.
Dear rShannonSmith,I wonder if it was difficult for the super sleuths at YouTube to determine what song I had used given that I put the song title and artist in the credits?

I used their AudioSwap application and was able to find another song that works. The application was very easy to use and has some decent music.
Have you ever been busted by YouTube, the RIAA, or the law in general?

Some folks from Catalyst were down in the Baton Rouge area shortly after Hurricane Gustav ripped right through. They stopped by Healing Place Church and had a conversation with Pastor Dino Rizzo. You can see a part of that conversation in the video below.
Hurricane Torn Baton Rouge Needs Our Help!!! from Catalyst on Vimeo.
So, when asked what they needed, his answer was tarps.
So, what does Jesus look like to the people in Louisiana that have holes in their roofs? He looks like a blue tarp.
To help, you can go HERE and order a tarp.
You can have it sent to:
ONE (1) BLUE TARP
Healing Place Church
19202 Highland Road
Baton Rouge, LA 70809
225.753.2273
When you have purchased the tarp, please come back here leave a comment (anonymously if you wish).
The tarps aren't cheap. So, if you want to chip in on some tarps, you can go to flowerdust.net and see Anne Jackson's post about this where she explains how you can go in with other readers of her blog via PayPal. She is collecting money and will buy as many tarps as possible on 9/11.
Thanks. Much Love.

The folks at NOOMA have put out another video, and they are again doing a free preview on Facebook. It should be available until 1PM on Wednesday, but I would go now and check it out. You can go here to see it.
I think I have seen all of the NOOMA videos and this one is near the top, if not the best one.
Here's what they have to say about it...
We didn’t have anything to do with our birth. We are all here because some woman somewhere gave us life. Her pain, her effort, for our life. And when a mother gives like that to a child, she is showing us what God is like. But sometimes this part of God’s nature is overlooked. A lot of us are comfortable with male imagery for God. But what about female imagery for God? Is God limited to a gender? Or does God transcend and yet include what we know as male and female? Maybe if we were more aware of the feminine imagery for God we would have a better understanding of who God is and what God is like.
Let it be known that my mother and the mother of my children are by far the best two women on the planet. They don't make words to describe how much I love them.

Some friends of mine have been working to fight human trafficking for a couple years now. They have a group that meets regularly here in Raleigh. I found out today that they also have a newly created blog where you can keep up to date with what they are doing to participate in the fight.
Please go check them out. If this is something you are passionate about, you can do more than just read their blog.
One practical step you can take is to help bring the movie Call and Response to your city. Below is a trailer for the movie, but on the web site, they have a form for how you can 'Act'. If you fill out the form, which includes your zip code, you will be helping bring the movie to your city. Once they receive 1,000 entries from a city, they will set up a screening there. So, 'Act' now.
Here's the trailer...

Ragamuffin Top Challenge - Weeks 8 & 9
I was slack last week and never put up a video. So, this week is a two-fer.
I feel good about having kept up with the challenge for nine weeks. Follow through is not my strong suit. I like the changes I am seeing in my body composition. It gives me more incentive to keep it up when I start to see some muscle develop.
Thanks to everyone who has continued to ask me how it's going. That provides some great accountability.
Once Carlos gets his post up, I'll link to it so you can see how everyone else is doing.

Well, this video is about five days late. I weighed in on Saturday and recorded it, but I just got around to making the video last night. Check me out down below.
Last week was a good one. I did some working out and I am seeing some muscle definition develop. That's sort of like a bonus. I lose a little fat and gain a little muscle. Nice.
Check out how everyone else did last week.

So, this is pretty late, but I wanted to get it up anyhow. Last week we were on vacation. So, I didn't get to weigh-in until Monday morning. It was not pretty. Check out my video to see what the damage was.
This week has been pretty good thus far. I think I am going to get back off most of what I gained. Check in next week to see how I do.
You can check out how everyone else is doing, here.

This week will be brief. We are on vacation for the week at Carolina Beach with my mom and sisters. Currently, Kim, Palmer and I are on the patio of a fancy little wine shop/coffee house called the Grind. It is the closest connection to the internets that I have found.
Last week I was up a half a pound to 220. My goal for this week was to lose three pounds. Check out my video to see how I did.
This week since we are on vacation, my goal is not to gain any weight. Thus far, I'd say I'm doing okay. There's a lot more working out going on than I had anticipated. We are on the third floor so just going to the beach is a session on the stairclimber.
I hope everyone did great on the challenge this week. You can go here to see how they did.

This video makes me smile.
Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.
You can read more about Matt and his movie here.
Some of my favorite parts are: the dog attacking him (Kuwait City, Kuwait), the chick on the right in the white capris and striped shirt (London, England), and of course, all the kids.
What is your favorite part?

To start off with, I'll say that I just ate some ice cream and now my stomach hurts. Sunday is my "cheat day". So, I thought I would take advantage and have some ice cream for the first time in weeks. I'm so disappointed. It was such a waste. I feel like I should go run around the neighborhood or something.
So, this is the end of my third week. After last week, I was down 5 pounds total. This week was not as good as the first two. Check out my video to see how I did.
NOTE: I added a little sci-fi flavor to my video this week, which definitely upped the cheese factor.
Be sure to go check out how everyone else is doing here.

I finally uploaded my Ragamuffin Top Challenge video for this past week. I updated my original post and added the video to it.
I realize that all of you that subscribe in a reader would have missed the update, and thus missed the video. So, I thought I would post again and direct you back to the original week 3 post.
Enjoy.

Ragamuffin Top Challenge - Week 3

This week I decided to weigh-in on Friday morning. I went camping on Friday night and and came back Sunday afternoon. I didn't want to wait until Sunday night to weigh-in. So, I did it a day early instead of a day late.
My goal this week was to continue the "no sodas, no sweet tea, no kool-aid, and no snacking" diet and to exercise three times. Here's a run down of what I did for exercise.
Saturday: Basketball (2 hours)
Monday: Walk with Kim (~1 mile)
Tuesday: Full Body Workout, Basketball (1 hour), Bike Ride (~14 miles), Walk with Kim (~1 mile)
Thursday: Stationary Bike (20 minutes), Full Body Workout
My bike ride on Tuesday was the Triangle Triathlon course. So, now I have a start time for my second goal. Check out the video for what the official time is. Then, you can check back next week to see if I beat it.
You can go here to see how everyone else is doing. Be sure to check Jeramie Mullis. That's my homey. Also, you should check-in on Annie D, she's a trip.
Thanks for checking in. Come back next week to see how I'm doing.
Feel free to leave some encouraging words.

It's check-in time. Last week I started the Ragamuffin Top Challenge. It is a weight loss challenge started by Carlos, over at Ragamuffin Soul. Every week I will be checking in letting you all know how I am doing on accomplishing my goal of getting down to 210 lbs. Below is my update after one week. You can find my update from last week here.
So, there you have it. I am down a couple pounds. Hopefully, I will continue to go down a few pounds each week.
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that I am also trying to eat breakfast each day. Bob and Gillian of the Biggest Loser say that it gets your metabolism going in the morning when you eat breakfast. So, I am giving that a try, too.
You can see how everyone else in the challenge is doing here.
Come back next week and see if exercising helps me lose more weight. Thanks for the support.

Nooma has put out another video. They are giving a free preview on Facebook for today only. You can go see it here.
Here's the description of the video...
It's easy to get overwhelmed with appointments, gatherings, to-do lists. But what are we really doing with our time? Many of us are running from place to place and it seems like life is just passing us by. We're doing so many things, a little bit of everything, and yet it doesn't feel like much of a life. But most of us find it hard to say no. We feel obligated. There are so many good things to do. So many good causes to join. But while we're busy doing all these good things, are we missing out on something great? Maybe saying no would be easier if we knew what it meant to say yes.
The message in this video is one that I have been trying to put into place in my life for awhile now. The idea that we should say "No" to a lot of things so that we might be able to shout "Yes" to a few things.
Andy Stanley said once that he was the only person in the world that could play the role of husband to his wife and father to his kids. Those are two of the things he says Yes to. I'm trying to do the same.
What are you saying Yes to?

There's an interesting video today on ESPN.comabout athletes, specifically NBA players, and their role in international human rights issues. The video speaks on China's human rights history and their involvement with Darfur. It's about eleven minutes long, but I thought it was worth watching.
Description:
Shelley Smith explores an athlete's responsibility to take a stand and why many refrain from discussing political issues publicly.
What do you think?

The first Wednesday of every month, our home group has dinner together. Last night, we decided to have breakfast for dinner. I brought my macbook along and sat it on the counter and used iMovie1 to capture the action in the kitchen. The movie below is the result. I captured a frame a second and it is played back at 30 frames per second.
Enjoy.
- back I had to download and use iMovie 6 because iMovie 7 has had some functionality removed, which seems a bit odd. One example of removed functionality is the ability to record time lapse videos.

Did you hear the one about Pat Robertson and Al Sharpton sitting on the couch together?
Has anyone seen the commercial with Al Sharpton and Pat Robertson on the couch together telling everyone to take care of the planet. This combination is just funny to me. This is the stuff that you hear in jokes.

Both Traci and Justin have already written about this, but I thought I'd write about it here, too.
Presidential candidate, Barack Obama, gave a brilliant speech on Tuesday in Philadelphia. If you haven't heard or read it, I highly suggest you check it out. It is about forty minutes long. So, it may be easier to download the mp3 of the audio and listen to it on your iPod. I was able to right click on the mp3 link and select "Download linked file" in Safari.
For me, it was long. I don't have a great attention span. At some point I was kind of bored with his delivery, which, oddly, for me is was a good thing. Often he is so impressive with his delivery that he could be saying heretical things and people would applaud.
With this talk, it seemed to be more about content. There were flashes of his eloquence, but overall it was as if he was more interested in getting the message out, than igniting passion within the listeners with a fiery delivery.
If you haven't heard it, take the time to listen to it.

Yesterday, our friend Tim Catlett sank a half court shot, live on College Gameday before the Duke-UNC game. He won $17,500. $10,000 went to Duke and he got the other $7,500. Afterward, he ran straight to his family and celebrated with his son, Coleman.
