I have a problem...
I have a problem. I'm not sure that there is a clinical name for my problem, but I'm certain that someone could determine its root cause in one session on a couch. So, what's my problem?
I start books and don't finish them.
Here's a list of the books that I have started, but have not completed, and it's worth noting that there are probably more that I just can't remember.
- Everything Must Change - Brian McClaren
- Babyproofing Your Marriage - Cockrell, O'Neil, and Stone
- The Organic God - Margaret Feinberg
- Banker to the Poor - Muhammad Yunus
- Myth of a Christian Nation - Greg Boyd
- On Becoming Babywise - Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam
- Just Walk Across the Room - Bill Hybels
- Sex God - Rob Bell
- Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis
- Good to Great - Jim Collins
- Desiring God - John Piper
- The Tipping Point - Malcolm Gladwell
- Blue Like Jazz - Donald Miller
Sad, huh?!?

I have a solution:
You can agree that each of the books on the list that you don't finish within, say, 30 days will become mine.
This will give you a sense of urgency to finish them so that you won't lose them, and it gives me the satisfaction of being a good friend who helps you finish your books.
...um, and maybe put of the Hybels book until last... I really want to read it :0)
I have the same problem and some of those same books on the list of unfinished books.
If you figure out a solution please share! :)
Is it a problem with you or a problem with the books? Do you think that you know what the point is before you finish it?
Is there another book that catches your eye before you finish?
Why did you start reading those books in the first place?
Just some thoughts?
In sweeps Traci...our local "root of the problem" finder....I love it!
Answers for the question asker...
Most of the time, the problem is with me. I have a lot going on and when you combine that with my lack of discipline, you get me not finding/having time to read. So, I read a few chapters, a few weeks go by, and then I feel like I need to start over. So, I read the same parts of a book several times.
New books continuously "catch my eye." For instance, today I was in the book store and I saw a book called Microtrends. So, I picked it up and read the introduction.
I start reading these books for a multitude of reasons. One of the main reasons I pick up a book is, someone else read it and the way they talked about it made me interested. I also see books on people's blogs. I like to read those books because it is fuel for discussion with that person.
I may change my super power to learning by holding a book to my head. It is not the reading its self that I enjoy, it is the knowing of what is in the book.
Occasionally, books are just bad and those I just stop reading because I don't feel like wasting my time. I don't think many of those made it to my list.
A few notes, I would have finished Sex God, but I left it in the locker room and someone took it home with them, or threw it away. Zack, the Hybels book is for a study my home group is doing. We actually decided to do the study without the book. I think this was a good decision, but I did start reading the book.
Awesome!
How cool to be doing a study on evangelism!
What a concept...
There's a blog I like to read (http://adrianwarnock.com/) where there are often mp3 interviews that can be downloaded, and I heard Adrian interview Bill about the book. It made me add it to my nonexistent Christmas list...
Shannon, do you need a session on my couch? Perhaps you're just always looking for the next best thing, like all of us are.
Bernie,
you are so wise...
